You can find Varaxium in various areas throughout Varaxis most notably east of the entrance and northwest of the chest.
Combining 6 Varaxium with 3 Cobalt Ore while smelting creates a Varaxite Bar, which then can be used to create Equipment. You gain 1,800XP everytime you get an ore.
